In the Shoes of a Graphic Designer…

What does a Graphic Designer do?

A graphic designer conveys information visually, uniquely, and creatively. They create anything from magazines, advertisements, posters, billboards, packaging, logos, and almost any marketing material imaginable. Many people nowadays associate graphic design with digital products, but it’s been around long before the invention of technology.

The first traces originate back to communication through prehistoric cave paintings. Slowly, you will find significant advances throughout the years, from the Sumerians’ introduction of written language to the Chinese inventing paper and the first-ever prints.

It wasn’t until 1922 that William A. Dwiggins, an American book designer, calligrapher, and type designer known best for the creation of the type fonts Metro, Electra, Caledonia, and Eldorado, formulated and coined the term “graphic design,” referencing himself.

The world of graphic design is still changing and advancing with no end in sight, which makes graphic design a challenging but enriching field. Our creative director, Carlo Labriola, works diligently and expertly to create all of the visual work here at VIA. Come up with interesting concepts. These exciting concepts have won design awards and exceeded customer expectations.

A few examples of his work are:

  • Logos and stationery
  • Flyers and posters
  • Brochures
  • Maps and plats
  • Signs
  • Websites
  • All things digital, like hanging and tradeshow banners
  • Graphics for print and digital advertisements
  • Slide shows
  • Promotional videos

You not only have to be creative to be good at graphic design, but you also have to be willing to keep up with technology. To be a successful graphic designer, you must be an excellent communicator to ensure that you and the client are on the same page about the design you will create.

If the client states, “Make it Pop,” you must understand better what they want. You have to be persistent, hardworking, and so much more.

We decided to gain more insight by asking Carlo a few questions.

Where do you find inspiration?

Look around you! Inspiration is everywhere. From playing with my kids, places I’ve visited, movies/animation I watch, music I listen to, comic book artists I follow, and the sports I like watching. Experiencing different situations gives me an endless supply of new and unique ideas.

What software do you use?

I use Adobe Creative Suite and several different Microsoft products for most projects.

As a Creative Director, how do you work cross-functionally with developers, copywriters, project managers, etc.?

I get to collaborate on a team with different skill sets and talents that infuse enhanced problem-solving and creativity to achieve the common goal of success. We each bring something completely different to the table. Good communication is critical to any successful project, from brainstorming and conception to execution. Mutual support and trust in one another make VIA Marketing successful.

Why is it essential to pay for a good logo for your company?

It helps you start forming your brand identity. Logos also help your brand stand out amongst your competitors by helping your business gain exposure and expansion.

What are the key differences between good and bad designs?

A good design will be unique and memorable so customers can easily remember it. A stand-out color palette or a clever shape can help you create an unforgettable logo. A bad logo will mimic other logo designs or be too busy and displeasing to the eye, causing consumers to dismiss that brand.

What is your design process?

My process might look different depending on my design, but here is a baseline.

  • Concepts – brainstorming ideas for your designs.
  • Concept development – polishing and refining your ideas.
  • Design review – getting feedback on your design ideas.
  • Iterate – improving your techniques and collecting more feedback.

What If I need something designed for my company?

Knowing what looks appealing to the eye and will attract consumers to your business can take time to navigate. Here at VIA, we can work with you to create a design your customers will always remember. Contact us today, and we will help you reach your goals!
